Training of Farmer-Based Organizations in Climate-Smart Agronomic Practices

The West Akim Municipal Assembly has taken a significant step towards ensuring sustainable agriculture through the training of Farmer-Based Organizations (FBOs) in climate-smart agronomic practices. This initiative, aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity while mitigating the adverse effects of climate change, was held at the Municipal Assembly Hall in Asamankese.

The training program brought together over 50 farmers from various communities within the municipality. Facilitated by agricultural experts from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) and supported by the West Akim Municipal Assembly, the workshop focused on equipping farmers with innovative techniques to improve crop yields, conserve natural resources, and adapt to changing climatic conditions.

During the opening session, the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Seth Oduro Boadu, emphasized the importance of adopting climate-smart practices to safeguard the livelihoods of farmers and ensure food security in the region. He highlighted that climate change poses a significant threat to agriculture, and proactive measures are essential to mitigate its impact.

The training covered key areas such as soil management, efficient water use, integrated pest management, and the use of drought-tolerant crop varieties. Farmers were also introduced to modern technologies like precision farming tools and climate forecasting systems that aid in better planning and resource management.

One of the participants, Madam Afia Mensah, expressed her gratitude for the training, stating, “I have learned new techniques that will help me improve my farm’s productivity while protecting the environment. This knowledge is invaluable, especially in these times when unpredictable weather patterns are affecting our crops.”

The Municipal Director of Agriculture, Mr. Daniel Oduro, reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to continuous capacity building for farmers. He announced that follow-up sessions and support systems would be established to ensure that farmers effectively implement the practices learned during the training.

This initiative aligns with the government’s broader agenda to promote sustainable agriculture and enhance food security. The West Akim Municipal Assembly remains dedicated to supporting its farmers through innovative programs and collaborations that foster resilience and growth in the agricultural sector.
