GUIDELINES FOR MARRIAGE REGISTRATION AT WEST AKIM MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY

  1. When a person(s) desire to marry under the Ordinance within the West Akim Municipality, one of the couples to the intended marriage would have to prove their Particulars/ Details to the Marriage Registry of the West Akim Municipal Assembly (WAMA) for a notice of Marriage to be issued for Twenty-One (21) Days.

The Notice is to allow the public to raise any question(s) on the intended Notice of Marriage.

Particulars/ Details needed for Notice of Marriage are:

            Husband & Wife, Name, Condition, Age, Occupation/ Profession/ Rank, Dwelling/                   

            Place of Abode (H/ No.).

  • If no impediment or any other lawful hindrance is raised by one against the marriage within the 21 Days of Notice of Marriage, the Registrar then issues a Registrar’s Certificate to the couple to enable them go ahead and celebrate the marriage at any registered place of their choice.

            These include the Registrar Generals Department, Any Licensed Church or the                           Premises of the West Akim Municipal Assembly. The Registrar’s Certificate however expires three (3) months from the date that the notice was given.

  • If a couple decides to sign the Marriage Certificate at the premises of the West Akim Municipal Assembly, the Registrar’s Certificate is presented to the registry on the Monday of the week in which the ceremony is intended and the signing date would be arranged together and then performed within the same week as would be agreed.

PRICES FOR WEST AKIM MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY FOR REGISTRATION OF MARRIAGES:

  1. Customary Marriage Certificate: GH¢ 53.00
  2. Ordinance Marriage Certificate:
  1. Issuance of Notice:         GH¢   50.00
  2. Registrar’s Certificate:  GH¢ 160.00
  3. Signing Ceremony:         GH¢   50.00

Total                                  GH¢260.00

NB: Rates are subject to yearly review (But not Mandatory) via the Fee Fixing Resolution of the Assembly.

  • Notice to Applicants:
  • Applicants between the ages of 16 and 18 years will need Consent from a family member to complete their registration.
  • Providing false information van lead to prosecution under the laws of Ghana.
  • Consent Provider must be above 18 years. If you provide false information, you will be liable to legal actions as per the law.

MARRIAGE CEREMONY AT THE REGISTRAR’S OFFICE

The partners may make arrangements to contract a marriage before a Marriage Registrar, any time, but not longer than three (3) Months, after receiving the Registrar’s Certificate, and here is what to expect for the procedure:

TIME FOR MARRIAGE PROCEDURE

The law requires that the marriage contract procedure be done between the hours of 8 am in the forenoon on any weekday not being a public holiday. Also, it must be done with the doors to the office kept open during the procedure, and in front of witnesses, so the law prescribes. This final procedure at the registry is a short one and last for a couple of minutes (about 10 minutes)
