The West Akim Municipal Assembly is one of the Thirty-Three (33) Municipals and Districts in the Eastern Region currently. It was established by legislative instrument (L.I) 1421 of 1988 and elevated to Municipal status by L.I 2050 in 2007.
The West Akim Municipal Assembly has three (3) Zonal Councils namely; Asamankese Zonal Council; Osenase Zonal Council; and Brekumanso Zonal Council. The Electoral Commission of Ghana conducted election for Assembly Members and Unit Committee Members and upon the successful election of Unit Committee Members; the West Akim Municipal Assembly on the 30th of March 2021 swore-in Unit Committee Members and inaugurated the Zonal Councils. The Municipal Electoral Officer, Joseph Debrah-Gyamfi was present to conduct election of Zonal Council Members and Zonal Council Chairmen.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Seth Oduro Boadu welcomed Members to the inauguration. He admonished the Unit Committee Members to take the task and the responsibility which lies ahead of them. He also stated that, when the task bestowed on them is executed diligently, it will lead to the development of the Municipality. He further appealed to Unit Committee Members to work in unity with their respective Assembly Members to bring development to their various Electoral Areas.

SWEARING-IN OF UNIT COMMITTEE MEMBERS
Hon. Municipal Chief Executive led Members of the Unit Committee through the Swearing of the Official Oath, Oath of Allegiance and Oath of Secrecy which empowers Members to carry out their assigned duties as elected Members for their Units and declared them duly inaugurated. In all 192 Unit Committee Members were commissioned for purposes of effective administration of the various Units.
After a successful election, the following Hon. Members were sworn-in as Members of the various Zonal Councils.

FUNCTIONS OF ZONAL COUNCILS
The Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr. Paul Mac Ofori and Deputy Director, Mahamood Shakil Kpedau took turns to educate Hon. Members on the roles and responsibilities of Unit Committees and Zonal Council Members. Some of the functions touched were that, as Zonal Council Members, they were to:
Enumerate and keep records of all ratable persons and properties in the Zone
Assist any person authorized by the Assembly to collect revenues due the Assembly.
Recommend to the Assembly the naming of all Streets in the Zone and cause all buildings in the streets to be numbered
Plant trees in any street and erect tree-guards
Prevent and control fire outbreaks including bushfires
Organize with other relevant organizations Annual Congresses of people of the Zone for the purpose of discussion development of the locality.
Responsible for the day-to-day administration of the UTZACs
Arrange revenue collection contracts with the Assembly and collect revenue due the Assembly
Prepare annual budgets of revenues & recurrent and development budgets of the UTZAC for the Assembly’s approval
To open and operate a Bank Account
Provide, operate and maintain Community Service
Takes steps as may be necessary to prevent disasters
Prepare short, medium and long-term development plans
FUNCTIONS OF UNIT COMMITTEES
Supervise Staff of the Assembly performing duties in its area of authority
Assist in revenue collections
Organize communal and voluntary work
Educate the people of their rights, privileges, obligations and responsibilities
Provide focal point for discussion of local matters
Monitor and implement self-help and development projects
Assist in enumerating and keeping records of all taxable persons and properties
Propose to the Assembly regarding levying and collection of rates for projects and development
The inauguration of the Unit Committee and the Zonal Council Members was successful and made Members aware of their responsibilities as Members of the Zonal Council and Unit Committee.
