The West Akim Municipal Assembly, led by the Social Welfare Unit, in collaboration with RiA
Foundation and the West Akim Health Directorate, has successfully conducted a
free health screening exercise for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the municipality on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
The exercise benefited 141 individuals and covered essential health checks including
Blood Pressure screening, Blood Glucose testing, Hepatitis B testing, Malaria testing,
and Retro testing. A team of professional dieticians was also on hand to provide personalized nutritional advice based on individual test results.
The program was carried out in two phases:
Health Screening Phase
Engagement and Empowerment Phase
During the engagement session, beneficiaries were taken through educative talks and motivational speeches aimed at empowering them mentally and encouraging self-reliance rather than dependency.
In her address, the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Paulina Akabila, expressed
appreciation to all collaborating partners for making the initiative a success. She
highlighted the broader vision of the Mahama-led administration to improve the living
conditions of Persons with Disabilities. She further revealed that plans are underway to provide various skill training programs for PWDs to support the goal of self-reliance.
Beneficiaries were encouraged to join the Federation of Persons with Disabilities
(PWDs) in the municipality to stay informed and benefit from similar initiatives by the Assembly and government. The MCE noted that important updates and opportunities are usually shared during the monthly meetings of the federation.
